Eileen Jones, a 73-year-old friendly and chatty woman living in sheltered accommodation in Shoreditch, east London, was brutally murdered on 8 March 2011.

While kindly taking an uneaten Meals on Wheels meal to her blind neighbour Paul Rangel, she was attacked inside his flat by 45-year-old Christopher Newton, who was visiting and had been drinking heavily with Rangel.

Newton subjected Eileen to a ferocious, unprovoked assault, punching, kicking and stamping on her, leaving multiple injuries to her face and chest with clear shoe marks on her clothing. Her body was found the following morning in Rangel’s room after he raised the alarm.

In December 2011 at the Old Bailey, Newton was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years. The judge described the savage attack on a defenceless elderly woman who had simply been trying to help her neighbour.

Rest in peace Eileen. You will not be forgotten.
