Michael McGrath was a 57-year-old bachelor from Carshalton who had once lived a colourful life, rubbing shoulders with 1960s underworld figures. A close friend of Great Train Robber Charlie Wilson in his wealthier youth, he is remembered with warmth and sadness by those who knew him as a generous, larger-than-life character whose later struggles never erased the affection he inspired.
He was battered to death with a vase in his own flat on Shaftesbury Avenue after a dispute with four men linked to the Wo Shing Wo Triad gang: Yuxiang Liu and Chou Wei Leong, both of Chinese origin, together with Ryan Parker-Saunders and Jerome Castrillo, who had been using his home to store drugs.
