Sir David Amess was a British Conservative Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament for 38 years, representing Basildon from 1983 to 1997 and then Southend West until his death; a socially conservative Catholic and Brexit supporter, he was known for campaigning on animal welfare, fuel poverty (sponsoring the Warm Homes and Energy Conservation Act 2000), Southend city status, and other causes, and was knighted in 2015.

On 15 October 2021, while holding a constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, he was murdered by being stabbed multiple times by Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old of Somali descent who had been radicalised as an Islamic State terrorist.

Ali was later convicted of murder and the preparation of terrorist acts, and sentenced to a whole-life term.

Rest in peace Sir David. You will not be forgotten.
