Christopher Yates was a 30-year-old computer programmer from Barking whose life was tragically taken in November 2004.

Described as a quiet and caring man, he had spent the evening celebrating a friend’s birthday before accompanying her to a bus stop. He is remembered with great love by his family and friends, who were devastated by his loss.

He was murdered near the University of East London after being subjected to a ferocious and unprovoked attack by a group of men. Christopher was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked and stamped on. Three men, Sajid Zulfiqar, Zahid Bashir and Imran Maqsood, were later convicted of his murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

During the trial, evidence was heard that the attackers had referred to Christopher as a “white man” and an “Englishman” following the attack.

Rest in peace Christopher. You will not be forgotten.
