Jack Large

Jack Large was 14-years-old when he was killed in November 2007 after getting into an argument with two other teenage boys outside an unmanned police station.

He was attacked after earlier “messing around” with an umbrella that poked the main perpetrator; the confrontation escalated from a perceived racist name-calling incident.

The 15-year-old defendant (African-Caribbean, later 16 at sentencing and unnamed for legal reasons) stabbed Jack in the back and then plunged the knife so deeply into his skull behind his left ear that it lodged in his brain; Jack died in hospital two days later after life support was withdrawn.

A second boy (14 at the time, also from Chigwell and unnamed) handed over the knife and was involved in the antagonism.

In December 2008, the older boy was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter; the younger one was not convicted on the murder charge. In January 2009, the killer received a five-year detention sentence (with time served deducted), while the accomplice got a three-year supervision order for possessing an offensive weapon
