Marilyn Cook, 40, and her 16-year-old son Nicholas were both killed in April 1992 by their landlord.
Faisal Latif replaced the lock on the property’s back door and kept the key. This allowed him to enter after dark, douse the house with petrol, and set it on fire.
Latif immediately fled the country (first to Pakistan, then to the United States under the name Faiz Ali), where he built a new life, ran businesses, and married.
He was tracked down in Dallas, Texas, in 2013 via fingerprints and a driving licence photo, extradited to the UK, and pleaded guilty at Stafford Crown Court to two counts of manslaughter and one of arson with intent to endanger life. He was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter and 10 years for arson
Rest in peace Marilyn. You will not be forgotten.
