Mary Ann Leneghan, a 16-year-old schoolgirl from Reading, Berkshire, was abducted, gang-raped, tortured, and murdered in the early hours of 7 May 2005

On the evening of 6 May, she and her 18-year-old friend were kidnapped by six men in a Reading car park. The gang took them to the Abbey House Hotel. There, the girls were held for several hours, repeatedly gang-raped, drugged with crack and heroin, beaten, burned with cigarettes, scalded with boiling sugar water, and otherwise tortured.

Around 3–5 a.m., they were driven to Prospect Park, where Mary-Ann was forced to the ground and stabbed more than 40 times (including a fatal 3-inch-deep wound to the neck that punctured her lung). Her friend was also stabbed and then shot in the head with a homemade bullet but miraculously survived and raised the alarm.

The six perpetrators — Adrian ThomasMichael Johnson, brothers Joshua Morally and Jamaile MorallyIndrit Krasniqi (a Kosovan asylum seeker), and Llewellyn Adams — were all convicted in 2006 at Reading Crown Court of murder (and multiple other offences including rape and kidnapping).

They received life sentences with minimum terms of 23–27 years. Four of them were already under probation supervision in London at the time of the attack.

Rest in peace Mary Ann. You will not be forgotten.
