Raymond Kelly

Raymond Kelly, a 17-year-old, was shot dead in the back with a 12-bore sawn-off shotgun on 1 February 1991 during an armed robbery at the Phoenix Green Filling Station shop in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.

Two men ordered him and others to get down on the floor; the robbers escaped with only £70–£80, and the incident was captured on CCTV. At Winchester Crown Court, prosecutor David Elfer QC outlined the case, resulting in Jamil Chowdhary (then 25, of Reading, Berkshire) being convicted of murder as the gunman on 2 April 1992 and receiving a life sentence with a 20-year tariff, while Mohammed Womiq Nazir pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 12 years.

Chowdhary has always maintained his innocence, claiming a miscarriage of justice reliant on Nazir’s unreliable accusations (after Nazir first named others), CCTV height mismatches, and other evidential issues, a claim later examined in the Channel 4 Trial and Error documentary episode on his case.
