Richard Whelan

Richard Whelan was a 28-year-old man from Kentish Town whose life was tragically taken on 29 July 2005 after he was stabbed on a London bus in Islington.

He was travelling with his girlfriend at the time of the incident. He is remembered by his family as a loving partner and much-missed young man whose death left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

He was attacked on a route 43 bus after a confrontation with another passenger who had been throwing food and behaving aggressively. When Richard challenged him, he was stabbed multiple times on the upper deck of the bus. Despite efforts to save him, he died later in hospital from his injuries.

The attacker was identified as Anthony Joseph, who had recently been mistakenly released from custody earlier that day due to a procedural error. He was later charged and convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and detained indefinitely under mental health legislation.
