Sean Whyte

Sean Whyte, a 17-year-old from Colne, Lancashire was fatally stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife during a chaotic street fight that erupted outside his family home after a birthday party.

The violence began over an £8 debt owed by his sister’s partner to Wasim Mumtaz and quickly escalated as both sides called for reinforcements, involving around a dozen people with shouting and racial abuse reported.

Sean collapsed in the road and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital; his aunt was also injured in the brawl.

Hasan Mumtaz, then 18 and brother of Wasim, was charged with Sean’s murder but was acquitted at Preston Crown Court in 2004 after denying the stabbing; he was convicted only of violent disorder and unlawful wounding for stabbing Sean’s aunt with scissors, receiving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

No one was ever convicted of murdering Sean Whyte, and Lancashire Police closed the case without further action, leaving the family devastated.
