Thomas Mervyn ap Rhys Pryce, a 31-year-old British lawyer working for the international firm Linklaters, was robbed and murdered on 12 January 2006 as he walked home from Kensal Green Tube station in northwest London, just yards from the flat he shared with his fiancée. 

Two local teenagers — Donnel Carty (18) and Delano Brown (17), both Black British and from the Kensal Green/Sudbury area of northwest London — chased him down after earlier robbing another man at the same station. Carty stabbed him multiple times (twice in the chest and once in the hip), penetrating vital organs, while Brown took part in the robbery. They stole only his mobile phone and Oyster card before fleeing.

Both were convicted of murder at the Old Bailey in November 2006 and sentenced to life imprisonment; Carty received a minimum term of 21 years, and Brown’s was later increased to 20 years on appeal. The case became a high-profile example of “steaming” robberies and prompted widespread debate on knife crime and tube station security.
