Terence Carney
1953 – 2023
Hartlepool, County Durham
Perpetrator
Terence Carney, a 70-year-old man from Hartlepool, England, was murdered on 15 October 2023 by Ahmed Alid, a 45-year-old Moroccan asylum seeker.
Alid, who followed an extreme interpretation of Islam and was enraged by Israel’s response to the 7 October Hamas attacks, had just stabbed and attempted to murder his housemate Javed Nouri (a Muslim converting to Christianity, whom he viewed as an apostate) while shouting “Allahu Akbar.” He then fled with a knife and randomly attacked the unrelated, defenceless Carney — who was on his habitual early morning walk — stabbing him six times in the street after approaching him from behind.
In police interviews, Alid admitted the killing, stating Carney was an “innocent victim” killed in revenge for Gaza, because “Britain had created the Zionist entity” and “they killed children and I killed an old man”; he said he would have killed more if possible.
In May 2024, Alid was convicted of murder (deemed a terrorist act), attempted murder, and assaulting police officers. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 45 years.
Terrence was described as a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather with no connection to the conflict.
Rest in peace Terence. You will not be forgotten.
